busybox v1.1.3 problem in ubuntu start up

I installed ubuntu 8.04 usuing wubi, and after installing some updates it wouldn't log in properly and displayed this message.

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu7) Built-in Shell (ash)

how do I resolve this?

Hardy is not supported on the desktop anymore, only server. I suggest you install at least Lucid as it is the earliest release on desktop you can use.
