11.04 and windows xp boot

Asked by clombard

I have a double boot ...11.04 and WindowsXP.
When I boot a screen comes up and I select the O/S I want to run (no problem).
However when I select Ubuntu a second screen (GNU GRUB) comes up asking for almost
the same choices. This second screen does NOT come up after Windows XP is selected
to boot.
Is there a way to eliminate the second GNU GRUB screen from appearing after Ubuntu
is selected on the screen before...?
thanks

Did you install using Wubi or is it a true install?

It's possible but not recommended to mess with the boot menus.

Grub will default to show it's menu if it detects multiple operating systems on the computer. I haven't checked the latest release, but for past versions it will show even if you tell it to hide. To get around this you have to manually edit some of the grub scripts. For new users to ubuntu I think it's safer to avoid messing with the bootloaders because it's harder to repair an install that won't boot.

With Wubi it's very dangerous to mess with the windows boot manager e.g. some users have set it to boot Ubuntu by default and then set the Timeout to zero (thinking they can still boot windows from the grub menu). What happens is that you can no longer boot windows (selecting it from grub just goes back to the windows boot manager which proceeds directly back to grub).

If you decide to do a directly installed dual boot, you'll only have the grub menu - the windows boot manager is no longer required.

Think I'll just leave it alone.
Thank you.
