Wubi detects whether your PC is 64bits or 32bits (this is not the same as whether you are running 32bit or 64bit windows). Many people are unaware that their PC is 64bit capable.

If you want to force wubi to run the 32bit version then supply the --32bit option (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide for details) or download the 32bit desktop cd iso and place it in the same folder as wubi.exe (or burn the iso to cd and run it from there).

I have just checked my Dell Inspiron 530 with this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218/en-us

And its a 32 bits pc that are some years old,64 bits computer was not so common at that time. So its must be something wrong with the Wubi detection then.
So I will use a 32 bits cd to install Wubi.

Don't confuse your Windows OS with your CPU architecture. That link shows how to check whether you're running windows 32-bit or 64-bit and that is unrelated.

The best way to identify your architecture is to identify your chip and go to the intel site and check there.

Processor
Type Intel Core Duo E2160 / 2.2 GHz
Multi-Core Technology Dual-Core
64-bit Computing Yes

If that is your chip then you have a 64-bit PC. If so, please update that bug you created and mark it as invalid. Thanks

It was pre- installed with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit when I bought it from the Dell homepage on internet some years ago . Why would they do that if its a 64 bits PC?

But I will check again to be sure. I have no access to that computer now. But I will report here as soon as possible.
And if you are correct I will mark the bug as invalid.

Thanks for the assistance.

A lot of 64bit computers came pre-installed with 32bit windows. In many cases if you went on the dell website and clicked "Customize" you were given the choice of 32bit or 64bit Windows as a build choice. The reason was that 64bit windows was new and some things didn't work well e.g. flash; plus the 64bit stopped some 16bit apps from working.

Anyway... I've seen many people have the same question and in all cases so far, Wubi is correct.

It was correct. It seems Dell have installed a 32 bits operating system in a 64 bits PC.
I suppose it was to much problems with 64 bits Vista for some years ago.
Anyway good to know.
I have closed the bug report.

Thanks for the help.
