YES...I was able to use the link you sent and install Ubuntu 11.04 alongside Windows XP.
One small glich however...when in Unbuntu the "restart" option just hangs on the black Ubuntu screen with the 5 dots.
but on "shutdown" it shutdowns the computer fine.
When it hangs on "restart" I just have to reboot it manually.
In WindowsXP "shutdown" and "restart" both work fine.
Is there a fix for this...? If not I can live with it.
Thanks for all your help.

Please use Alt+SysRq REISUB when it is hanging - hard shutdowns are dangerous. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key

Run chkdsk /f on the ntfs host partition (from windows). You can either do it on the command line, or go to My Computer, right click on the 'drive', Properties, Tools, Check disk for errors, fix automatically.
Defragmenting isn't a bad idea, but usually Windows defragmenter will ignore the root.disk as it is too large. (Better to do this before you install)

Also, check your /var/log/syslog (use the Log file viewer) and see if there are any exceptions noted around the time you restarted. If so consider creating a bug.
If you want to you can copy your log or sections of it to http://pastebin.ubuntu.com and return the address back here for us to take a look.

We need the pastebin address (once you paste it the address bar will
contain the reference to your pasted data). Copy and return that back here.

OK if AltSysRQ .xxx doesn't work, then you have no choice (obviously) but
better to try first.

Also...with 11.04 after the screen Saver is active for a few minutes (GLText) the screen locks up and the computer
freezes and has to be re-booted.

What computer brand/model and graphics card do you have?

The computer I am having the problem with is a Pentium4 2.40GHz- 2GB Ram using a Foxconn 648/661 series motherboard.
Running WindowsXP PRO. The graphics card is a Radeon 9600 series.
Recap: Windowsxp restarts and shuts down fine. Ubuntu 11.04 shuts down fine but hangs on "restart".
Under Ubuntu the screen Saver locks the computer after a few minutes.
Thanks

The screen hanging on screen saver seems only when using the GL Text.
I tired a few different screen savers and they all worked fine.

Correction: Screen Saver still locks up the machine. Maybe it's just an old computer...?

I have a similar graphics card on an old machine. I haven't tried it in a
while, but with early Natty it wasn't running Unity - I had to login to the
standard gnome desktop. I'll have to dust it off and see what gives - but
I've been running 10.04 on it without any problems. Maybe you should try
10.04.2 instead?
That's assuming it's the graphics card but it does sound likely from your
description.

Perhaps you should create a bug for this problem.

Can you help with this problem?
