Wubi installation problem

Asked by Charlie Hogg

I am new to ubuntu and thought I'd try it out. I am installing it alongside windows xp media centre edition on a acer aspire laptop using the download here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer

When I download and run the install, the installation fails just as it gets to completion. The error says to check a log file in the local settings folder. This log file finishes with the lines shown below.

I think the installation should be able to find everything from the web download and install. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Charlie

Hi,
I advise you to separately dowload the iso file of the Ubuntu distribution that you want to use to install on your computer. Then check the md5sum of the downloaded iso file for its integrity.

When you use wubi for installing Ubuntu inside Windows, you can then indicate Wubi the location of your iso file (in fact you can just put the iso file in the same directory where you have the wubi.exe file.

You may download the Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS iso file for your architecture (I advise to use the 32-bit version) or the 10.10 version which is the latest stable version from

http://releases.ubuntu.com/

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10684050&postcount=365

That post lists where you can find the wubi for 10.04.2 and 10.10. If you download the desktop ISO and burn it to CD you can just run it off the CD. If you place wubi.exe in the same folder as the ISO just make sure it is the same release.

The version at releases.ubuntu.com/lucid won't work as it needs to be replaced (bug 722955)

Thanks. http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick/wubi.exe worked for me. Charlie
