Hello gnanavale,

It can be a problem with the drivers of your HDD.
However, I recommend you to try the following:

 - Take your Windows Installation CD or your recovery CD (if you don't have it, just google for a recovery CD)

 - First of all is uninstalling ubuntu.

 - Reboot your computer with the recovery CD inside. Boot from the CD.

 - In the CD you'll need to access the recovery console. It'll be in a different place depending of your version of windows.

 - After getting into the console, do the following:

   - In Windows XP -> Insert the following commands: "fixboot" and "fixmbr" -> Reboot without the CD and you'll see Windows starting by default.

   - In Windows Vista/7 -> Insert the following commands: "bootrec.exe /FixBoot" and "bootrec.exe /FixMbr" -> Reboot withour the CD and you'll see Windows starting by default.

 - In Windows, go to My PC icon and right click it (in Windows Vista/7 it's not named My PC). Select "Administer" (or something like, my Windows is in Spanish :P). Select ubuntu's partition and delete it.

Now you uninstalled ubuntu. Now you'll have to download the ISO from www.ubuntu.com and install it by burning the image on a CD, inserting it and reinstalling it, not by wubi.

IMPORTANT: BEFORE INSTALLING IT, TRY "TESTING UBUNTU WITHOUT INSTALL" (or something like) AND SURFING YOUR HDDs TO MAKE SURE IT'S NOT A DRIVERS PROBLEM. If you get an error, or you cannot see the HDD, just stop, you cannot install ubuntu. If not, try to install it by the CD.

Bye

Boot to windows and chkdsk your partition. I am sensing you used wubi. You will get a better experience if you resize your NTFS partition and install a true ubuntu to a true partition

What exactly is the error and do you see anything else before the error? Does it say "Try (hd0,0): I/O error" ?

Go into windows disk manager and check your partitions and list them here or take a screen print.

I'd try running chkdsk on your windows partitions ('drives').

Can you help with this problem?
