I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell laptop and it won't boot up.

Asked by Frank

I have a Dell laptop with a Inspiron 64 processor. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. When I try to boot to it it goes to [ 0.325196] NET: Registered Protocol family 1, and than hangs. It will not proceed from this point. It is a brand new laptop (one day old). When I installed I had to disable ACPI before it would load.

did you do an md5sum check on the file you downloaded?

type in google "ubuntu md5sum check" to see how to do that check

Could you explain more what happens at boot, and what you did to get this message

Checked the md5sum and it's correct.

OK, the md5sum is correct. Where do I go from here? I can not get past the step in the boot process about " NET: Registered Protocol family". This is very frustrating.

OK. So I'm guessing no one knows how to resolve this issue. I've tried installing Ubuntu under Windows using WUBI and get the exact same indications. Can anyone help with this? It appears to be a ACPI problem but I'm not sure.

I don't know boot process of Wubi, so I link question to this project.
If you reinstall as classical dual boot, re-associate question to Grub2 and I will answer.

If you disabled ACPI to get it to install, you have to do it again to get it to boot. Hit 'e' on the first entry when you see the grub menu and use the cursor to navigate to where it says 'quiet splash'. Add the same workarounds you used to install right after that.

If you don't see the grub menu at startup then hold down the SHIFT key.

Can you help with this problem?
