error: not such device ...grub rescue appears at booting in windows vista after installation of ubuntu 10

Asked by armin koroknay

I installed Ubuntu in a windows vista pc, worked perfekt after the first reboot. then the ubuntu asked for updates, i did it, but grub someway did not update properly. after the second reboot the pc did not boot, but showed
error: no such device ..Number code.
grub rescue

severel other peaple describe also this, but there is no solution to be found in the internet, so far

who can help, who has ever reesolved this boot problem, must be quite common, as I did just what the installation software told me.

thanks for an answer.

It sounds like you installed with Wubi (the windows-installer). This is a common problem - the fix is to boot your windows repair CD (or DVD) to a repair prompt and repair the bootloader.

For XP:
fixmbr

For vista/7:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Can you help with this problem?
