Asked by Jeffrey Alto

I have been running XP on a machine with 2 hard drives. I installed Ubuntu on the second drive and tried it for a day or so - it ran. Decided to update to latest version. A dialogue box suggested something about GRUB with two boxes to check. My machine rebooted and HUNG after POST! Will NOT even recognize hard drives in BIOS and hangs with "Grub rescue" message Will not boot to Windows rescue panel because does not seee hard discs! AnY help here?

Boot with the Ubuntu live CD and try to restore GRUB as follows:

1) Open Terminal (Applications --> Accesories --> Terminal)

2) Verify your partitions:

  sudo fdisk -l

Give us the output of this command here for further instructions.

It sounds like you installed under windows (with Wubi). This is a common problem when you install wubi to a drive/partition other than the windows partition.
If this is the case, reinstalling grub will not help and can do more damage to windows.

Ummm. I don't have the Ubuntu Live CD, I downloaded the program directly to my desktop. I guess I will have to make one with this laptop I am using. It is a little slow - maybe 20-45 Mbps download speed. What is a good download site for the program? Do I need to download the whole thing or is there a tool avail for this issue? thanks from california.

@Jeffrey Alto,

See the Wubi Megathread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1639198 Problem #1.

When you install Ubuntu with Wubi you need the windows bootloader. There is a bug that allows users to overwrite the windows bootloader with grub2, which leaves your computer unbootable. To fix it you need to reinstall the windows bootloader.

Insert Windows DVD or Repair CD, boot to a command prompt and run:
fixmbr

For Wubi installs you have to avoid updating packages grub-pc and grub-common.

Thanks, you are right, I did install Wubi style to a drive other than Windows. Now I cannot even see my HD's in my own Bios!. Cannot use a Windows rescue function from XP install disc because my machine does not see drives, DVD drive it sees, but not HD's. I did not notice any warning about installing Ubuntu to other than the drive that had Windows...did I miss it? This must happen a lot. Thanks, what shall we do?

What do you mean your bios no longer sees your drives? That seems odd and is not a typical symptom of this problem. Boot from the windows dvd, when you get prompted hit R to git to a repair prompt. Run fixmbr.

Please don't copy text when replying. Thanks.

I tried to use Windows disc to get to the rescue panel . windows loads the files but when it gets to the screen where you select install or repair and I select repair I get a message that Windows did not detect a hard drive on computer and cannot continue. if I restart and go to my Phoenix award bios my HD's do not show and will not auto detect. I am downloading the Ubuntu file, it is maybe 40% complete.

If you are getting a grub rescue prompt then the BIOS must be reading the hard drive. Because grub is installed on the hard drive master boot record. If the BIOS doesn't detect a hard drive then you'd get some other message. And Ubuntu will only be able to see drives that the BIOS recognizes. So there must be some other problem occurring - anything else you can think of that explains this?

Anyway - if you do get that Ubuntu CD booted, run the bootinfoscript (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/) and pastebin (http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/) the results returning the address here so I can take a look.

Thanks, I will try to run the bootinfoscript (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/) and pastebin (http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/) as you suggest. I see your point about the "grub rescue prompt". I cannot think why I would have the BIOS issue. I do think the C: partition on the HD containing my Windows install is about completely full. Regards.

OK... when you generate the bootinfoscript results - assuming it reports /dev/sda and confirms Grub2 is in the MBR. You can go ahead and install lilo:
sudo apt-get install lilo
sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr

(After running the first command you'll get a big warning screen. Press ENTER to bypass. Warnings are related to booting linux not windows and can be ignored).

If you want to wait until I've looked at the results that's fine too - but it may be a few hours from now.

Thanks I will resume these tasks tomorrow mid-day. It is too bad, this did not need to happen. The Ubuntu version of the OS looks promising for function and form, the update glich is njot a plus for those with XP installs on diff drives. The webs are rife with add'l. victims. Thank you for your assistance. Kind regards.

you pasted the script not the result. The link http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ describes how to run it.
Place the output on http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/ and return the pastebin address here.

Run from terminal (CTRL-ALT-t):
sudo apt-get install lilo
sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr
sudo lilo -M /dev/sdb mbr

Commands are case sensitive. Ignore the huge warning screen (hit ENTER
to bypass). It is warning about using lilo to boot linux, not Windows.

Once completed, exit the terminal, and restart the computer, removing the CD.

this happened:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install lilo
sudo: unable to execute /usr/bin/apt-get: Input/output error
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt
sudo: apt: command not found
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ get install lilo
The program 'get' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install astk
You will have to enable the component called 'universe'
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

can you tell me what to type into the terminal window?

That's odd. I've never seen this before: sudo: unable to execute /usr/bin/apt-get: Input/output error

So you've booted an Ubuntu 10.10 desktop CD? I suppose there could be a problem with the CD - try booting it again, hit the space bar when you see the little keyboard and man icon on the bottom centre, then you'll get a menu where you can select - check disk for errors.

I'll look around for some hints as to what might cause this problem in the meantime

I think there was a slight prob with the dvd drive door. I rebooted and have Ubuntu loaded from the disc now. Need to fix this MBR issue. Thanks.

Shall I try this again now? May have been DVD drive door issue previously.

Run from terminal (CTRL-ALT-t):
sudo apt-get install lilo
sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr
sudo lilo -M /dev/sdb mbr

Commands are case sensitive. Ignore the huge warning screen (hit ENTER
to bypass). It is warning about using lilo to boot linux, not Windows.

Once completed, exit the terminal, and restart the computer, removing the CD.

Yes. Try it. If it tells you that you have to enable the "Universe repository". Then go to System, Administration, Update Manager. Click on Settings, go to the first tab, and check the Universe entry and then "reload" as you exit. (Don't run any updates).

I'm signing off for the night. If you have any problems, run the check on the DVD. Could be a problem with the burn.

This really a straightforward fix from Ubuntu - it's seeing your drives fine - I've seen countless people with the same problem. So if it's not working there must be some other problem happening to you whether it's the dvd drive or the burn (always burn at the slowest speed). If you continue to have issues you can also use a 2GB USB stick and boot from that. If you boot from USB check the drives again - depending on your bios it might change the order when you boot from USB.

Good luck.

Hello bcbc,

OK, I think I am good now. Machine boots and has ability to select OS at boot as it did before I attempted to update Ubuntu. It seems that if one installs Ubuntu, perhaps into a drive or partition other than the one that may contain a Windows installation and then updates the Ubuntu there appears an update to this "Grub" function, which with no watning or caution renders the computer unable to boot or even mount the HD's - or something like that. A user has no clue as to why and if they installed Ubuntu by downloading as the website allows, they may not have a disc to boot from. Of course they cannot use a Windows rescue disc either.

Bizarre. This help website saved the situation and I appreciate it, however I may suggest that fix-it instructions be simply worded in steps rather than using obscure jargon. I needed to enter the lilo instructions in sequence and allow for the function to complete for each step, but found that out by trial and error. Error is a speciality of mine as you see.

Pretty sure Ubuntu is a nice use of Linux OS, also pretty sure it will remain a very tiny segment of possible users due to difficulty of trouble free installations. When I hit the MBR glich I Googled it and there are thousands of users that had/have the same issue. Imagine how many more just gave up without attempting to fix it.

Thanks again, I will hang with the OS and see what it does for me. Some friends at JPL suggested it has merit.

Regards, Jeffrey

Great to hear! There is a little additional step you need to do to insure against future problems. Go to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1639198 and look for the Permanent Fix.

Regarding your confusion with the instructions - any suggestions to make things clearer are welcome.

In terms of the problem/warnings etc., Wubi is supported by Canonical, and the method to notify them of bugs is through launchpad.net (see bug I linked to). They then prioritize it and deal with it as they see fit. I am not aware of any community-based method to update the ubuntu.com website and/or get bugs's priority increased - other than by affected people going to the bug and clicking on "This bug affects # people. Are you affected".

Hope that helps.

Thanks, bcbc. I read thru much of that Wubi thread you point to. I may have fallen under the spell of Problem #2, or one of its' several variants. from what I read it looks like I could well encounter more issues simply by attempting to boot Ubuntu again, which I have not done. Perhaps when I have a few days to spend undoing possible damage, with your kind help, I may be tempted to go at it again. Regards.
