when installing 10-04 desktop within windows is i possible to dictate the partition size

Asked by Paul Burton

how do you dictate the partition size when installing 10-04 desktop within windows 7
On previous versions of desktop it was only possible to use up to 30 gb of disk space
I would like to use the majority of the space for 10-04 leaving say 100 gb for windows

Thats a windows question really; I don't recall any limits to partition sizes outside of the filesystem limits, which are larger than modern disks.

Here is a guide.

When you install from within Windows (Wubi) - the max size of the install is 30GB or so. This is not a "partition size" - the windows installer does not create a partition - it is a 'virtual disk' - a single file that is stored on your windows ntfs partition (or an alternate partition accessible from Windows)

If you want to split your drive, I recommend using Win7 to shrink your 'drive' (windows partition) and install Ubuntu direct - not via Wubi. i.e. boot your computer from that CD, don't run the CD while in Windwos.

While it is possible to create a larger virtual disk (root.disk) with a Wubi install, I can't say whether this will be stable or have a decent performance (never tried it myself) but I imagine the creator of Wubi had some reason for setting the max size. If you feel this is your only option I'll refer you to something you can try.

Can you help with this problem?
