Changed Font Prevents Login - reverse it?

Asked by Dennis McClain

I'd started some minor customizing my v10 by changing the fonts associated with open windows. Apparently I picked a combination that wasn't available because the next time I tried to boot it failed with an error that said something like 'echo font'. Is there any way to reset this or otherwise recover without having to eliminate my Ubuntu installation on my NTFS disk and start over? It never gets to a 'safe mode' choice.

You can boot to liveCD and chroot to the installed OS. You can then change whatever you changed from there.

Hiya,

Yes, I installed it as a directory on the root of my NTFS drive: C:\ubuntu using wubi

Hi Dennis,

I'd try booting in recovery mode and trying to reset your fonts from shell. Since this isn't really a Wubi-specific modification, I'll direct you back to the main Ubuntu questions. If you can't boot in recovery mode and you need to chroot into Wubi (but I doubt it) then I can help you with that. I'll subscribe to the question so just ask if you need it.

Good luck.

Hi Dennis,

I just reread and see you can't boot in recovery mode. So maybe this is a Wubi issue after all.

Can you confirm which release you are on. You said v10, is that 10.04 or 10.10. If it's 10.04 then there has been a recent grub update that is causing issues. In that case look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1639198 (Problem #2, Solution #1 and then Permanent Fix after that)

If not post back more info including release, and full description of your boot up steps. Thanks

@bcbc: Sorry bcbc, I read too fast...
@Dennis:
1-Could you provide exact error message ?
2-At boot, press <Space> key to get Grub menu (if you don't have it) and choose second line (recover mode). Then have a look at used preference window on font.
An erroneous font should prevent you to login successfully. After you enter login/password, the desktop could start and fails, giving hand back to login screen. You should reach at least login screen (if you don't use direct login).

@ delance, I think it was me reading too fast :) I think you're right that it's a wubi issue - I guess we'll leave it up to Dennis to clarify.

Can you help with this problem?
