Wubi - Want to upgrade to 9.10 from 8.04

Asked by hugh f

I have a computer with 8.04 on it, with the update manager it is only allowing me to update to 10.04 or 8.10 but if I click on it for 8.10, I get a massage saying (Could not find the release notes - The sever may be overloaded) on this computer I do not want to put 10 04 yet, but it does not give me the option to upgrade to 9.10
Regards Hugh

If you grab the Intrepid alternate ISO, you can upgrade to Intrepid (8.10), then you can upgrade to Jaunty using a similar method, you can then upgrade to Karmic as you wish

You can do this a lot quicker by just clean installing Karmic.

Thank you actionparsnip I have went through most of option that are available from the link but it still comes up with the massage (Could not find the release notes - The sever may be overloaded) would it be possible to download 9.10 to a CD/Pen and upgrade from this - this is a second operating system on the machine that is run through wubi - may this have anything to do with the reason that it will not upgrade, if I can down load is there a link page on how to to upgrade by this means that I can work from.

Move packet to Wubi project, as Wubi has special issues about update.

Ubuntu releases are supported for 18months, except long term releases (LTS) which are supported for 3 years. So 8.04 -which is an LTS - is supported until April 2011. You can upgrade from an LTS to another LTS (e.g. 8.04 to 10.04) but you can't go from 8.04 to 9.10. The only way to do this would have been to go to 8.10, then 9.04, then 9.10 (but this is no longer possible as both 8.10 and 9.04 are no longer supported). I suppose you could use the cdromupgrade process from the alternate .iso but I don't recommend trying this.

Upgrading wubi installs can be problematic anyway. Current versions use a new version of grub and this has proven to be unstable. So while it is possible to upgrade to 10.04 I don't recommend this either.

A better option would be to migrate to a partition install. You can use http://lubi.sourceforge.net/lvpm.html (note LVPM only works on Ubuntu releases up to 8.04)

Whatever you do make sure you backup your before upgrading.
