change ubuntu from wubi to a real dual boot partition

Asked by Jesse McCombs

i installed ubuntu 10.10 with windows 7 using wubi and as i add some things like games to windows i noticed that it's making ubuntu slower. I'm assuming this is because of the wubi install and i would like to make it a proper dual boot. I know about lubi but it doesn't say it works with ubuntu 10.10. is there other ways to change it to a dedicated partition dual boot?

You can migrate a wubi install to partition using this howto (either use the script provided, or do it manually) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1519354

You need to create the partitions first. Use the Windows 7 disk manager to shrink the volume, and then use gparted in wubi to create an extended partition in the space, adding two logical partitions, one for Ubuntu root (/) and the other for swap (if you need to hibernate you need a swap partition > the size of your RAM).

Note: you can only have 4 primary partitions and the extented partition counts as a primary partition. If windows7 wants to create a 'dynamic drive' because you already have 4 primary partitions, this won't work.

Can you help with this problem?
