Installing and using wizard pen driver... ...

Asked by techno-mole

Hello.
I'm trying to setup and use my graphics tablet on lucid beta 1, I know I should expect issues as it's a beta.

I have installed the xserver-xorg-input-wizardpen package using synaptic, which to be honest didn't seem to do anything, I went to the ubuntu wiki regarding the wizardpen driver and it said it should install fine, and include the hal configs etc, and it did install but, I am unsure as to what to do with the configs, do we put them in the etc/hal/policy/fdi folder ? if so which one exactly as there are a load of them.

Anyway after messing around with that way i went back to downloading and compiling it myself, which has worked fine as far as I can tell, but the tablet still doesn't work, I have an fdi file which worked on karmic and jaunty, but now it doesn't, it's named 99-x11-wizardpen.fdi which might be part of the problem, should it be called something else now ? and also where should it be ?

I did also try the .deb package, but again it installed fine, but didn't do anything, and the instructions (assuming you still need to put fdi files here and there) seemed a little lacking (in my opinion)

I wrote a how to on the ubuntu forums(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1357711) a while ago, and have used this to install the driver(which I got from launchpad), and after checking the install all seems well, but I'm stuck as to what to do with the fdi file, do I still need it ? and where should it be put and what should it now be called ?
also in the wiki it says that after installing you should still include the lines in the xorg.conf which I never did under karmic or jaunty, so why do I need to now ?

I would appreciate any help, the tablet is a trust slimline 6300 (it comes up as a - UC-LOGIC Tablet WP8060U) the how to link I have included is all I needed to do in karmic and jaunty to get the tablet working, with pressure sensitivity as well, I was able to use it in gimp, inkscape and ,mypaint really well, I also had it working in adobe elements running with wine, and on various other graphics apps I use on a virtual machine, I use the tablet for digital editing of my photographs (very amateur photographer) and other digital image manipulation.

cheers

It seems there are some problems with HAL (it doesn't work for me either). I have it setup in my xorg.conf and disabled the automatic addition of devices by HAL.

Please attach your xorg.0.log

I didn't think hal was used anymore ? anyway the xorg.log is attached,
it makes no sense to me, but this is out of my comfort zone, it's a bit
annoying that something that was easy to sort in karmic is no
complicated again, I'm liking lucid, but this may be the reason I don't
use it straight away, I need to have the tablet working.
Many thanks for taking the time to help.

Cheers.

It seems that launchpad doesn't allow for attaching files to questions...
Could you perhaps open a bug and attach it? We'll continue the discussion there.
