WIPS Single Room Capability and Accuracy

Asked by Elbano Mibelli

Hello,

I was wondering if WIPS was capable of determining position of several fingerprints inside the same room. For example: a 16m^2 room with several WiFi users inside. If this is possible, then what is the accuracy of the algorithm used?

Thanks in advance.

Hola, we still have to do some systematic testing of the engine (after we finish re-writing it), but I suspect that with enough Access Points lying around (maybe around 10 or more) WIPS would be able to tell the difference between far apart points (e.g., each corner of the room) around 60% of the time. The WiFi is so noisy that anything not divided by a wall or floor will not be reliably differentiated. However, there is no reason why the algorithm couldn't use shorter range beacons (e.g., bluetooth or RFID) since all its needed is a unique identifier and a received signal strength indicator (RSSI). So if you want sub-room resolutions I would suggest supplementing WiFi with other beacons. Hope it helps.
