Wingpanel sample compiling how?

Have a project directory with downloaded lp:wingpanel.
Want to recompile the sample SampleIndicator.vala, but I don't know how.
I have read Developers First Steps, but documentation in general seems rare beside the official Vala docs.
So, please give me additional resources for elementary os developer docs and show me
how I can compile and start the wingpanel example. That's would be great.
