Could the Bar of a Maximized Window and the WingPanel be merged?

Asked by Sven R. Kunze

I have to admit, I like the way the mainstream Ubuntu merges the top bar of a maximized window with the "Ubuntu WingPanel".

It actually gives me two things I currently miss from eOS:

1) more space for the application
2) I can grab the application window easily and move it around
3) easy to find the close button

I think 1) is obvious. 2) is really convenient to have when working with multiple windows. I can just move the mouse upwards until it hits the top edge of the screen. Right now, I need to find the right spot to grab it. 3) is similar to 2). In vanilla Ubuntu, I just need to move the cursor as left and up as possible, then click. eOS makes that a bit harder as I also need to find the right spot.

Would that be possible to add? A non-default option also would work for me.

Hey Sven,

The name you are looking for is global menu. This is not possible to be added to wingpanel of elementary os.
There are some creative people who got it working but without elementary's wingpanel.

The reasons you are giving are pure based on your own liking.
There are also people who hate it and i am one of them.
I do agree on the drag space being minimal but there are other options to make it better.

It is also elemetary's believe to not just add features because other distrobutions have them.
We only add them if they have proven be user friendly and fits the workflow and design believes of elemetary os.
If you want to talk more about it you should talk to the UX team ( who make these decisions). You could contact them by our IRC channel.

Thanks for using elementary os and think with us to make it better.

Kind regards,
Kay van der Zander

I have to admit I have my difficulties to sign up everywhere to talk to the right people. Couldn't they just respond here to this very specific issue?

It does not need to be the default, but the possibility would be great. Providing an easy (almost blind) way to grab and close a maximized application window is very important. The space efficiency just follows as a result.

This said, it's not just my own liking but the collective experience of the UX teams of Windows and Ubuntu. I would not dismiss their studies-based experiences that easily.

Best,
Sven
