Future of indicators

Asked by Maxime Gauduin

Hi all,

I've been working on packaging Pantheon on Arch Linux for quite a while now. I was very pleased to see you guys decide to base Pantheon on GNOME 3.10 then 3.12 as it made things a lot easier on my end (since we always have the latest version only).

Up until now, trunk wingpanel has been working mostly fine with libindicator/ido 12.10 (albeit not without issues here and there with indicators), however I noticed that the 0.3.x branch needs a more recent libindicator/ido, which in turn require an ubuntu-patched gtk3. This is never gonna happen on Arch because we only ship vanilla packages (with a few exceptions of security or build/paths fixes).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember talks about possibly ditching ayatana indicators and switching to an in-house plugin-based panel, is it still planned or do you intend to keep using ayatana indicators?

Seems this is not exactly a popular topic. I guess I'll just give up on wingpanel/slingshot if the 0.3.x branch is merged, and use xfce4-panel or tint2 for Pantheon on Arch Linux.

I hope someone will come and give you more informations about the future of wingspanel.
Regards

Bonjour Corentin,

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

Cheers
