Problem making Image of 32Gb SD card

Asked by Peter on 2017-05-28

I tried to make a image of a sd card from my raspberry pi3. The card is 32GB. There are over 100GB of free diskspace (NTFS). But Win32Diskimager stops after clicking on READ and shows error message saying that the disk has not enough space. I tried with v 0.9.5, v0.7 on win 7 and win xp. Same result. Any idea?

Can you please try the latest release v1.0? I don't know why it would be giving you this error, unless the SD image is from a different brand of SD card of the same size.

Actually, if it is a read error, there are a couple of things you can try. First, make sure the destination path has enough free space. You need at least 5% more than the space needed, may need 2x the amount of space that the image requires (I don't know if Windows buffer copies on read outside of the program). You can also try checking the "Read Only Allocated Partitions" box. You may have to shrink the RPI filesystem beforehand (reduce empty space).

I have had no problems reading/writing up to 128G USB drives in my testing. Unfortunately, I am limited to 16G SD through a USB SD reader, so a lot of issues people see on SD cards are not reproducible by me.
