Getting started - building & tweaking Widelands

I've played Widelands for some time now & want to make certain changes to the UI & game play. First, I want more menus & real time reports/messages about game play, the ability to explicitly select & direct units, make more terrain types/units... maybe less roads.

Right. Questions.

I'm running Win XP with MSVC 2008 Express & downloaded the other prerequisites listed (Python, Bazaar, etc.) but can't seem to find a zip file with the source.
Is the source code in zip or an exe?
Can I even build it with MSVC Express or do I need a better compiler?

Hello Marcus,

all this information can be found in our wiki [1]. Note that some of the changes you suggest (mainly: more units, less roads, ability to control individual units directly) will likely not be accepted into the game because the team has another vision for the game. More menus (especially a cool help menu) and more in game messages would be most welcome.
