You could try the commands
wicd-cli
nmcli
iwconfig
(with appropriate options and parameters - see the man pages for help)
Maybe that provides the information that you are looking for.

Thanks, I was not aware of wicd-cli existence, but I installed it now.
This command seems to give me the output I expected:
wicd-cli --wireless -p essid

Can you help with this problem?
