Wifi has turned off and will not reconnect, even after reboot

Asked by P. B.

I'm running Wicd on Ubuntu 16.04LTS. Wifi has suddenly turned itself off & I can't get it to reconnect, even after a reboot. The computer in question is a dual boot & the wifi works fine if I boot in Windows.
I've read that there could be a BIOS setting that has changed, if so what is the solution to resetting it.
If the eventual solution is to reinstall Wicd, will I lose all of my wifi connection settings.
Also, where are the wifi connection settings stored in Wicd & how do I access them.
