Timeline / Historyfacts / GoogleTimemap

Asked by omnior

This is a very old issue, but maybe it is possible to realise much easier in webtrees?
With the googlemaps module it was possible to show facts in the life of an individual. On the individual page it is possible to add history facts that happened during the lifetime of the person. The problem was always, that these facts depend very much on the location. A local war has of course influenced the people in the towns near that place, but nobody knew about that war on the other side of the world.
With a relatively new project under http://code.google.com/p/timemap/ it is possible to link geographical information and time information and show them in a dynamical chart. I think this could be a great addon for genealogical databases.
In principal all you need is the google api and data/spreadsheet behind with the places and date information. All that should already be in the places (from googlemaps in webtrees) and the time information on the fact.

Maybe once it will even be possible to show dynamically in these maps the borders between countries and how they changed over the time (see the last example of polygoon tweening on the example page)

See the examples under: http://timemap.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/examples/index.html

<<With the googlemaps module it was possible to show facts in the life of an individual.>>

Was possible? It still is. The Google Maps module works the same in webtrees as PGV.

On the webtrees home pages (httpp://webtrees.net), in the Forum we have a section called Feature Requests. That would be a good place to put this idea. But, of you look at our Blueprint list here, we have many large priorities that need to be addressed long before we would consider things like this. But at least putting it on the Features Request pages it wold be remembered for possible consideration - unless of course you would be keen to develop it yourself?

You might also look at this particular Blueprint:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/webtrees/+spec/extended-place-handling

Once we have that in place, and we certainly will, such ideas as yours will be MUCH easier.
