Nice suggestion David. I too think that it should not be a default.
But is it actually possible to find the units used per country (geonames does not provide it)?
The other alternative is to present an "Override units" dialog if the user selects the option.

I'm about to start working on a new location assistant (and related location improvements) and this came on the right time.
