Wallch 3 doesn't activate in separate accounts

Asked by jimwg

Seasons Greetings!

I have Wallch 3 on my first and primary Maya MATE account and it works super! (wish the image change intervals can be reduced to 5 seconds, that's another issue I guess), however when I do a switch user to another account it doesn't operate. I even re-installed Wallch on that account and still no go. I understand it's beta, so thought you should know!

Keep up the great work!

Hello jimwg!

Thanks for reporting this! What error messages do you get/what is the exact problem?

Hello Alexsol and Seasons Greetings:

No error messages. Just that when I switch user to another account Wallch 3 doesn't activate at all. No sign, like it's dead. When I return to my primary account it's chugging along perfectly. This issue occurs whether I first shut off Wallch in my primary account before switch user or not. I was thinking that maybe Maya's own desktop wallpaper was covering up or blocking the Wallch displays in the other accounts but then I don't even get Wallch's control panel. Maybe I'm running something that inhibits Wallch in my other accounts I am running Compiz in MATE in both accounts and LightDM. I'll do a check and see.

So, in the same user you are switching DEs having Wallch start at launch?

I've explained that this behavior is no possible: https://answers.launchpad.net/wallpaper-changer/+question/214717 at post #4

No, I'm switching MATE to MATE. From primary MATE account to secondary MATE account. In fact I checked whether Wallch would go on in my second account's XFCE mode but nothing, not even the Wallch control panel. I THINK a while ago I had Wallch running in that second account either in XFCE or MATE mode, but I'll have to check that and how.

So, you are switching between different users?

In this case you have to configure Wallch to automatically start at both of them, because they do not share the same configuration files!

Something odd's happened. I totally rebooted into my second account and was able to pop up the Wallch control panel and apparently I did have Wallch running once in my second account because the image list is different. I checked that it's configed for MATE and Started it, and I think I can tell by the drive lamp that Wallch was trying to load images every 20 seconds as I set it, but they won't display, as though it can't override the appearances prefs desktop images, no matter how much I stop and restart Wallch. I switched to my primary user account and discovered Wallch didn't go on and won't, not even the control panel comes up! Like the situation's been reversed except for the display part. Oh well, I'll keep beta testing.

Weird problem.

Please start Wallch successfully to an account and then copy its configuration files ( ~/.config/Wallch ) to the other account. Next, make sure that there is a corresponding file for starting Wallch at boot at ~/.config/autostart/ at both accounts!

Can you help with this problem?
