Configuration changes not being used

Asked by robins80

I just recently installed the MATE version of Linux Mint Maya. I then installed Wallch and I noticed that changing the default wallpaper style has no effect on how the wallpaper is displayed. It seems to be stuck on center style, I'm not 100% sure.

Hello robins80, thanks for your question. Which version of Wallch are you using?

I'm not very familiar with Mint, but I guess MATE is a Desktop Environment, different from GNOME 2 and 3 that Wallch 3.01 works.

If this is the case, then not even the desktop background should change via Wallch.

The new version of Wallch (4.0) will be able to work in multiple different desktop environments without any problem to its major functionalities (like changing the desktop wallpaper), but still, it will not be able to do some things if working outside GNOME 3.

In order to test how this 4.0 version of Wallch is, please download and install a PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wallch/3+
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wallch

Then, you will have the option to choose your desktop environment through Edit->Set Custom Command, but still, the 'image style' option from the preferences will probably not work.

On the other hand, if the wallpaper changing process works normally but the style just doesn't change, then it is maybe a known bug which has been fixed on the mentioned PPA.

The image style is still unchangeable.

Please tell me more information about your problem. Specifically I'd like you to tell me:

1) Does the desktop background image changes? Did you do a change to the program so as to work or it worked by default?
2) What Desktop Environment are you using now, after all?

The background image does change. I had to do the Set Custom Command to get the wallpaper to display.
I am using MATE on Linux Mint Maya (13)

Nice! Now everything is clear.

Wallch is designed to work by default only under GNOME 3. However, one can set Wallch to run in many different desktop environments, like LXDE, Mate etc. This just makes Wallch capable of changing the desktop background image and nothing else: For example the Open Current Image's Path option and the Styles option wouldn't work outside GNOME 3.

It would be very difficult for us to find how to do it in every possible desktop environment.

Not the answer I was hoping for, alas.

We cannot support everything, we have to work on something by default.

If Wallch worked on 23 different DEs perfectly, then 23 checks would have to be done in every minor thing, something we don't want. We want the GNOME 3 users to have the ultimate Wallch experience while users on other DEs to be able to work with it. We cannot please everybody, it's logical.

Be happy that you can use the wallpaper changing feature in other DEs rather than GNOME.
