Why do I see nonsense characters or boxes?

When I load a database in either the client or the editor, only nonsense characters or strange boxes are displayed. Why am I seeing this?

This is likely because you don't have the proper language pack installed to view the characters for the language you're trying to display. If your operating system doesn't have the correct locale installed it can't display the correct characters. Try installing the locales/language packs for your operating system for the languages in the database you are trying to view.
