I just stumbled across this application and love it!!

Is it possible to display the images from a directory in random order?

They are always by default displayed in random order.
I don't plan on adding a sequential order support at all, as Variety is, well, about variety, surprises and randomness. :-)
Images are chosen randomly from the whole pool of individual images, folders (searched recursively for images) and online feeds that you have enabled.
