How to determine size requirement for destination media

Asked by Kevin Cole

I have a bootable DVD (Edubuntu 9.10). "df -h" shows 3.4 GB in use. So, I purchased a 4.0 GB USB stick. "df -h" shows 3.8 GB available. However, usb-creator says there is not enough space on the destination medium. How can I determine ahead of time the space requirements for copying? Is there an alternative way to make the copy that will fit it into the alloted space?

Oops. My misunderstanding. It seemed logical to copy the source device (/dev/sr0) to the destination device (/dev/sdb). I did not scroll down far enough in the list of destination devices to note that the first and only partition on the destination device (/dev/sdb1) did not complain about the lack of space. (It begs the question of why /dev/sdb was listed as a choice, though... Or perhaps I'm still misunderstanding.)
