Asked by amanda kate taylor on 2011-06-15

running ubuntu 11.4

when i open the program manager this pops up instead:

Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

This is an unfortunate condition that can occur when packages get out of date. However, it can be solved by issuing 2 commands on the terminal:

The first command clears the package cache, while the second updates the cache from the servers.

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
sudo apt-get update

Once down you should be able to use the update-manager normally.

Thanks for explaining a work-around for the "unfortunate condition" (aka bug)

BUT

There is a bug,
YOU want me to report it,
I am even willing to spend the energy and time to try,
and then you don't let me!

So, what's the f. problem? Fix the string or enable reporting a bug! You are frustrating people willing to help.

Can you help with this problem?
