Unity top-left menu & top-right panel icons not appearing & no analog audio output!

Asked by Amigad

I have a Gigabyte GA-970A-D3, Athlon II 265 x2 64bit CPU @1.6Ghz/all other useful settings default, 4GB DDR3 1333mhz Unganged Mem, MSI R6450 1Gb gfx, Ubuntu 14.04 currently running slower current 'xorg - recommended?' video driver that was using prefered Proprietary driver when unity broke.

After giving the command 'sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf', checking what stopped working til the internet returned to then 'sudo apt-get update', it will not complete booting the desktop giving the top-left menu, but side-launcher icons & top-right panel icons missing from view. After tty 'startx' gives me the side-launchers & removes the top-left menu, it's also causing HDMI to lockout analog sound settings after alternating/playing with 'm in 'System Settings' stopping/doing nothing with any audio; especially analog audio output! HDMI not tested as analog worked before & what is needed to reappear when 1st-booted!

It changed so I currently have to 'Ctrl-Alt-Fx' to login & enter 'startx' w/o audio & no t-l menu or 'sudo startx' w/ audio & no t-l menu to get what I see now! I can only 'shutdown now' to do that!

I & friend have tried some commands from net pages, but nothing seems to work so far!

Do I need to use xorg driver to fix unity 1st or is Proprietary ok?

At a tty, I tried entering 'sudo startx' instead of 'startx' & noticed my audio works, but audio output device doesn't appear in 'sound settings' & settings including 'test sound' don't work!
