Why are program shortcuts on the Desktop? Unity's Launcher is fully sufficient. Maybe it makes sense to put Widgets on the Desktop?

Ubuntu is all customizability.
You can disable icons on desktop with tools like Ubuntu Tweak and gnome-tweak-tool. And if you want some widgets on desktop, you can install Conky and/or Screenlets.
It all depends on how much clutter you’d like to see everyday ;-)
