panel not working since installing updates

Asked by John Wilson

Running 11.1 on my desktop and earlier today installed 9 updates.
When I reboot the panel at the left of the screen does not appear.
I can open folders on the desktop but cannot open programmes.
Tried booting in recovery mode and fixing broken files
fsck told me the hardware clock gave a time in the future and fixed it.
When I tried to fix broken packages with dpkg I seem to have problems in /var/lib and /var/cache
What do I do next?

Have been trying to file a bug report about this but can't seem to find the right package to file it about.
Here is the output:
compiz (core) - Warn: unhandled ConfigureNotify on 0x3800242!
compiz (core) - Warn: this should never happen. you should probably file a bug about this.
