Disabling desktop effects in Ubuntu 11.10

You can disable Blur using ccsm (sudo apt-get install ccsm). But if Unity is slow for you, you can always use Unity 2D, a simpler version of Unity that runs better on slow computers:

What additional installation steps there are? I didn't find anything relevant in Appearance or Display settings (which where the first natural place one could look like this)

Log out.
When logging in, on the bottom of then screen choose "Unity 2D" instead of "Ubuntu".

Unfortunately, the horrible blur effect has now made it to Unity2d. The devs seem to think it cool, and I couldn't find any way to disable it.

You should install MyUnity from the Ubuntu Software Center. It provide a wide range of features and customization options to tweak Unity. You can disable the blur, change the launcher size, panel transparency, and also get rid of chameleonic behavior and many more.
