How to add applications to Unity starter menu (not dock!)

Asked by Zordid

I did not find ANY clue on how to add (or adjust!) applications that are found within the starter menu (not the left hand side dock!)

As an example: I installed RubyRipper using the make install command of ruby ripper 0.6.0 - when I open the Unity starter menu with the Super key (Windows...), and type "ruby" the ruby ripper is shown - BUT, big BUT: it does not have an icon and this is ugly!!

Now: I know I could create a starter myself, that's what I did - but I did not find a way to integrate THIS starter including the correct icon of ruby ripper into the applications menu!

Prior to Unity this was very easily done by configuring the start menu, but now????

Where's the technical anchor - why does ruby ripper appear in the menu, but is not editable??
I could add my starter to the left hand dock - but that's not what I really want, I want it as a "secondary" application in the starter menu to be found by typing "ruby..."

Help me please and make this easier in Unity!! I couldn't find anything anywhere on this!

You can either create a starter in /usr/share/applications/ manually, or you can go to System Settings > Main Menu and add the starter there (Like it was done before unity).

Thanks a lot! I always tried "Starter & Menüs" - which is quite boring.

But I still got questions that are not answered:

The submenus of this dialog do not match to what the starter presents. For example, I got a sub menu "Wine" which I see in this Main Menu dialog - but in the starter, when I click on the icon of "all application", there's a drop down list of application groups on the top - there, I cannot find "Wine" at all!

Problem no 2: I deselected some items in this configuration dialog (some "Deinstall" programs added by wine which I don't want to see when searching through the starter) - but this is not reflected in the starter!

And, last but not least: I cannot close this Main Menu configuration dialog anymore - it just crashes. :-(

Does not seem to be really stable...

Problem No. 1: As far as I know there are no submenues in Unity so far.
Problem No. 2: The only way I know of to remove programs from the menu is by deleting their starter in /usr/share/applications/ (or by renaming it to *.bak).

Hi Daniel,
sorry but:
1) there definitely are groups (not submenus) for applications - see my screen shot! So, somewhere there must be an origin for the shown groups and their contents!! I would like to add a screen shot which I've taken - but where can I add screen shots??
Click on the "+" icon in the unity bar, showing all applications. In the top right corner there's a drop-down list of application "groups", I'd call them!

2) This would be totally stupid - if the same old menu edit dialog is still "active" then it should function exactly the same way. So unchecked entries should not be displayed, otherwise it's a bug!

Should I post this as a bug?

1) OK, you are right. After looking around a bit I discovered there are some kind of submenues.
2) I'm not a developer at this project, but I think you should file a bug report.

Can you help with this problem?
