Why does Skype show up in the notification area and Opera (and others) not?

Asked by Christian Dysthe

I've gotten used to Unity already. I actually like it quite a but when I need to be productive and not a Linux geek (I can do both though). My main gripe is the notification area where some apps show up and others don't and there's nothing I can do about it Skype shows up while Opera and Weather Indicator don't. Why is this. and will there be a way to configure it? I mean, I do not use Evolution, but I still have see the mail icon in the notification area which is of no use to me. There's no working weather app and no system monitor option. Is this all because this is Unity in it's early stages or is it some kind of decision making on the development side we're seeing in this regard?

Hi,

Both Skype and Opera use the old system tray icons. Ubuntu uses the new ayatana indicators for that sort of functionality. The old system is no longer used and all apps will have to switch to the new system. 10.10 had both the systems in place, app devs were encouraged to use the new system but the old system was still in place. 11.04 has got rid of the old systray. I'll only have the new ayatana indicators but some special apps will be allowed to use the old system and one of them is Skype. You can manually whitelist apps for using the old system if you want though. see hhttp://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/03/how-to-hide-or-show-app-tray-applets-in-ubuntu-11-04/

You'll have to use a weather indicator which uses ayatana indicators like this one: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/01/the-weather-indicator-project-revives-what-might-have-been/

system monitor indicator: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/03/system-monitor-indicator-puts-cpu-and.html

Can you help with this problem?
