Right click functionality on Ubuntu BFB button

Asked by carltonh

I'm just an accountant testing 11.04, and noticed that right clicking on the Ubuntu "BFB" button in Unity does nothing.

IMO, Unity could still use a bit of tweaking for power desktop users such as myself who has a dozen active office applications and files and file managers all open at once. The tree based menu system is sometimes still best for such business.

I think that power desktop users would be greatly appreciative if I could right-click on the Ubuntu button and it bring up a tree based menu like in 10.10. Although it should combine the"Applications, Places, Systems" buttons into one menu with the right click. Maybe something like Mint Menu or one of the KDE menu launchers would be fine.

Since this is really only for power desktop use, it wouldn't need to be coded for a touch interface.

Thanks- Carlton

Hello carltonh.

I don't think bringing a tree based menu upon right-clicking is doesn't make sense when we already have Dash. It does not fit to the overall Unity design.
[I am speaking a regular user, I am not a programmer]

Fortunately for people who like tree based menu, Ubuntu Natty offers Classic Session. You can access it by choosing "Ubuntu Classic Session" instead of Ubuntu Desktop in GDM. (Where you input your username and password)

The menu in Classic Mode is composed of just one menu in the upper left corner, and it contains categorical sub-menus.
But, you can even change it to the three menus that are available in the previous version by adding a menu applet.

Providing a functionality in Home Button (a.k.a BFB) might be a good idea. I was thinking of perhaps adding a option to open Compiz Settings Manager, or some menu editor.
This new features request will have to be made for Oneiric Ocelot.

Can you help with this problem?
