Installed 10.10 Netbook Edition on old HP ZE laptop, can login but have only screen with default wallpaper and mouse, nothing else or no options.

Asked by Andres_S427

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition on my old HP ZE4115 laptop. After installation I am able to login with my username and password that I created. When I login, I can only see the default wallpaper and move my mouse, I have no other options.

I have to do a hard restart to turn my laptop off after logging into Ubuntu. I went to safe mode options and on top of the options I see an error, " [ 20.488049] AC' 97 1 access is not valid [0xffffffff], removing mixer. [ 20.488127] ali mixer 1 creating error.".

I am new to Ubuntu and not sure how to fix this?

Do you see the left toolbar (with choice of applications) or not ?

at the login screen press CTRL+ALT+F1

run:
cd /home; ls

ls == lowercase LS

you can now see your username and can run:
cd foo

replace foo with your username

You can now run:

rm -r ./.g*; rm -r ./.config

then press CTRL+ALT+F7 and login as normal, should be ok

Can you help with this problem?
