FWIW i'd like to let my voice be heard here a well. I *really* like unity so far, except for the FFM problems. I'd very much like an option to have the global menu only on maximized windows, which would solve both the FFM behaviour as make my large monitor more usable with small windows.

All the other solutions to the FFM problem seem a bit baroque to me, but maybe they would work better on smallish monitors?
