Since this situation is marked a duplicate, I'll mention it here, too: With ffm on, and if any window is open (even gkrellm as a dock) you can't get a file on the desktop to take keyboard focus. Example: you can right click to rename a file on the desktop, but the keystrokes go to whatever window had focus last.
