Cannot find Kernel Image Error, when booting from USB

Asked by Reedip

Hi guys,
Hope you are doing well.
My problem is that my desktop is currently having a new HDD, which has no Boot Sector(so cannot boot from it).My Old hard disk has XP on it, but since it is 5 years old, its gonna crash sooner than later.
I want to install Unix(Ubuntu 9.10) from my USB Drive(Kingston 2GB) (USB since my CD Drive doesnt function).
I downloaded the Unetbootin ver 377, to install Karmic Koala(9.10). Everything goes on fine, and I was also able to boot from a removable drive i BIOS.
BUT WHEN I TRY TO BOOT FROM THE USB(WHERE I SAVED THE INSTALLATION FOR UBUTNU9.10),it shows the message

COULD NOT FIND KERNEL IMAGE: LINUX
BOOT:

COulld you let me know what the error represents?
If you want, I could attacha snapshot of the USB(I mean the files listed in the USB Drive) and the syslinux.cfg file's contents.
Please let me know how the process can be done without any issues? I have been trying to install it for the last 1 week, but to no success.

Yes, please do. I get the feeling the iso file simply wasn't downloaded correctly. Did you download the iso from http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.10/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso and verify that the file was correctly downloaded? You can check via https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

I downloaded it via the torrents listed on the website

This is the Syslinux.cfg File's contents:
default vesamenu.c32
prompt 0
menu title UNetbootin
timeout 100

label unetbootindefault
menu label Default
kernel /ubnkern
append initrd=/ubninit file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper quiet splash --

label ubnentry0
menu label ^Help
kernel /ubnkern
append initrd=/ubninit

label ubnentry1
menu label oem=OEM install (for manufacturers)
kernel /ubnkern
append initrd=/ubninit oem=oem-config/enable=true

I am in my office right now, so I would get back to you by today evening for the USB Contents. Thanks anyways

By the way, I checked the MD5sum for the ISO, and it is correct!

Now what should I do???

Hi,
I found the reason for he error(does NOT mean I FOUND THE SOLUTION).

THe Sys-linux 3.72, packed in with unetbootin ver 377 is not able to determine where the syslinux.cfg file is loaded.
Since it is not able to determine that, or the path to vmlinuz/initrd.lz (assuming those are the kernel and initram files respectively), it shows the error
Could not find kernel image: linux

Is your USB drive formatted as FAT32? (You can check simply by going to My Computer->usb drive letter->right click->properties). If it's formatted as NTFS or exFAT, it's not going to work. Perhaps try reformatting the USB drive as FAT32.

Hi Geza,
It is formatted in FAT32 Version.

The Syslinux is not able to determine the path to syslinux.cfg, or it is not able to determine the path to kernel/initrd. That is all I could deduce from the error(according to syslinux's wiki)
