Can LInux Mint be installed with Unetbootin?

Asked by Jesse

I have successfully installed Kubuntu with Unetbootin, but I was wondering if Unetbootin supports Linux Mint.

Is there anything special I have to do? (Note, that I am new to Linux and would need a set of instructions or something).

Linux Mint isn't current supported since they only provide their releases in a LiveCD format and have no alternative (package-based) installation approach. However, given that Linux Mint 4.0 is the same as Ubuntu 7.10, with only a few extra added packages, you can easily convert your Ubuntu install to a Mint install by adding the Mint repositories.

In particular, what you want to do is open your package manager (Synaptic on Ubuntu, Adept on Kubuntu), and add the following line (the Mint package repository, so you can install the Mint-specific software and tweaks on your Ubuntu desktop):

deb http://www.linuxmint.com/repository daryna main community upstream import backport

Also, remember to reload your package list after adding the Mint repository line. The Mint-specific packages will be available in the package list, ready for installation, with the "mint" prefix (mintmenu, mintupdate, etc).

Slight update on this answer/question, UNetbootin now DOES support Linux Mint; simply use the latest version at http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and it will create a Linux Mint LiveUSB drive from which Mint can be booted and installed just like from a LiveCD.
