Do all .iso files work with unetbootin?

Asked by wardevour

ive been trying all day to make a usb boot drive with a few different .iso files. each .iso file has a [BOOT] with a .img inside and thats all. the .iso files i've got to work have way more stuff inside. any ideas why unetbootin wont work with these .iso files? They burn just fine but i cant get this machine to boot from a dvd and i'm trying a usb drive.

UNetbootin only works with ISO files which use one of the bootloaders commonly used by Linux distributions, ie isolinux/syslinux or GRUB/GRUB2. However, for your particular application, have you tried extracting the img file and supplying that to UNetbootin? If the img file is a bootable floppy image, it might work as desired.

i've extracted the files and ran unetbootin on the orignal iso and threw them all on the usb drive and this doesnt work. ive tried pointing unetbootin to the extracted .img and still nothing. i even tried just throwing the contents of the cd after burning on the usb. is there another way?

even extracting the contents of the .iso files which contain only /[BOOT] containing Bootable_NoEmulation.img only yields 4kb of data. these images burn quite nicely and work with most pcs. i cant get this particular machine to boot from any cds or dvds. Ive tried multiple external and internal disc drives.
