dist-upgraded xubuntu 14.04 64 livecd does not start :unable to find a medium containing a live file system

Asked by BigK

Made a xubuntu 14.04 64bits livecd on a xubuntu 14.04 64bits machine using uck 2.4.7
I applied the patch from bug #1325142 and made a "apt-get dist-upgrade" in customization console.
New kernel (3.13.0.44) and others packages (including libpam-systemd) installed fine.
Building ended fine and livecd.iso generated fine.

Trying to boot the iso in VirtualBox or on a USB stick failed at boot and dropped me to an initramfs prompt :
"unable to find a medium containing a live file system"

In this busybox shell I issued some commands :

'(initramfs) mountroot'
returns
'mount: mounting /dev/sr0 on /cdrom failed: No such device'

'(initramfs) blkid'
returns
'/dev/sr0: LABEL="Customized Ubuntu Live CD" TYPE="iso9660"

'(initramfs) mount -t iso9660 -o ro,noatime /dev/sr0 /cdrom'
returns
'mount: mounting /dev/sr0 on /cdrom failed: No such device'

Just making "apt-get upgrade" in customization console (not upgrading kernel as it won't add new packages) actually ended to a working livecd

My question is : Is it possible to upgrade the kernel in customization console to make a xubuntu 14.04 64bits based livecd ?

I created a link to an existing bug. The bug reporter Pascal de Bruijn also provides a patch to fix this bug.

A similar bug does also exist in casper package. I reported it and created a patch for fixing it here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/1433229
