Ubuntu One for Windows Portable

Asked by Ray Whatman

I would like to ask if it is/would be possible for the windows ubuntu one to run portably? does it rely on anything that would prevent it from running portably or would there be a licence conflict? we use ubuntu at home but our kids have to use windows at their school, the school will not allow any applications to be installed directly onto their systems so our kids use portableApps running from a usb drive... http://portableapps.com/ PortableApps.com make and maintain allot of great free and opensource Apps they have easy to use packagers and installers. I am asking because I would like our kids to be able to use this app while they are at school. I know they can access their ubuntu one account from any web browser and that is what they do now but with the current and preposed features I think that if Ubuntu One for Windows could be run portably it will very useful not only us but many others as well. I also think it could be a very popular thing for any ubuntu user who is in a position where they do not use a windows machine as their main PC or if they use one that is not their own. Also the PortableApps.com platform is wine friendly and all settings and data are stored on the drive it is running from as well.

thank you for your time this is looking like it will be very successful. and I hope to see a Mac version sometime in the future, I would appreciate any help and information you can give and I hope a Portable version is possible as I think it will benefit many many Ubuntu and Windows users alike

I believe it would be possible but a problem might be the ubuntu one folder if the drive letter changes the whole time and maybe the windows explorer integration as planned in future releases.

I think this is a great idea also. though, it appears that you want the UOne portable app to sync with the flash drive? In this case it would be redundant (correct me if I'm wrong).

I do remember when Yahoo's Briefcase service was VERY popular. One year they introduced software (Z Drive I think) that would allow the user to sign into the service and treat it like a virtual folder. It would open up a window and everything, but the folder was online. All files were just representations of the real things. For some reason they dropped the program :-(. I really loved it at the time. I think UOne portable should do this. Instead of the portable version trying to sync with the host system, just open a folder which the user can double click on the desired files and then when they save them back to that "virtual" folder it puts it back in Ubuntu One.

They could also use this on Ubuntu machines which the user doesn't frequent often. It could potentially save a TON of bandwidth for them.

Bringing up the issue again, as things have not really moved since. This would definitely be a nice feature!

Can you help with this problem?
