multiple file uploads

isn't ubuntone pretty much worthless to most people if it does not allow multiple file uploads?

I see your point. Keep in mind that Ubuntu One is most useful when using it from an Ubuntu desktop running the software. This is where you can upload multiple files and folders at a time.

Currently, the web browser is definitely not the best interface to use Ubuntu One. Until more features are added, a few of the purposes that is serves are
1. Gives you easy access to your files no matter where you are or what type of computer platform you are using.
2. Provides some file management support (upload, download, delete, share) for the non-Ubuntu scenario until desktop sync software is developed for other platforms.

The web browser files user interface will be enhanced in the future so it will offer more management capabilities... and possibly multiple file uploads if technically possible. Follow this bug to monitor our progress on this feature:
