Private Ubuntu One Servers?

Asked by Lorenz Leutgeb

I'd like to use a sharing software like Ubuntu One on my own server(s) to share files with my family and schoolmates.

Are you planning to develop some kind of server application as it runs on your Ubuntu One Servers, that serves the Web UI and the connection for the Ubuntu One Client and make it accessible to everybody, to allow people to set up their own "cloud"?

Hi Lorenz,

We currently don't plan to release the file sharing server code and web
UI / credit card billing code, and that code is written assuming that
things are running on S3/EC2, so it couldn't be run on your own servers
very easily anyway.

The file sharing protocol is free software:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntuone-storage-protocol, so someone could write
a storage backend for it that ran on a standard server. So far we
haven't had time to work on a standalone server component, and I am not
aware of anyone in the community doing so yet (although they would be
welcome to).
