Step 4 from the installation instructions don't open a web page

Asked by Matt Griffin

Since 3 July 2009, some Ubuntu One users have experienced installation issues.
- step 4 from the installation instructions don't open a web page
- clicking Applications >> Internet >> Ubuntu One does nothing
- no Ubuntu One icon appears in the system tray

I think these are all related to the same cause. What's the solution?

Bug 369038 [1] (and its many duplicates) shows that many users have reported this issue. Cheiron has posted a comment about the solution [2]. Here is a summary of the installation instructions.

Step 2 from the installation instructions [3] will install 'ubuntuone-client-gnome'. After installation, you need to also install ubuntuone-client and ubuntuone-client-tools. Click on the following links to do this through your web browser:

1. apt://ubuntuone-client?refresh=yes
2. apt://ubuntuone-client-tools?refresh=yes

Once these three pieces are installed you can proceed to Step 3 in the installation instructions (start client from Applications » Internet » Ubuntu One).

Users who had already proceeded to Step 3 without installing 'ubuntuone-client' and 'ubuntuone-client-tools' may need to kill the 'ubuntuone-client-gnome' process if it is already running. Once the process is stopped, install the 2 pieces of software, and then restart Ubuntu One.

You need not install ubuntuone-client-tools as well. It contains an extra command line utility which is not necessary for normal operation of the client.

The ubuntuone-client-tools package is the u1sync tool, and not strictly required for a client installation. It's an additional tool for interacting with the service via CLI for those that wish to do so.

We should have packages with fixed dependencies up later today so that only installing ubuntone-client-gnome will be needed, and it will pull in the required packages.

Also, the bug linked to in the first comment from Matt Griffin is not a report of this specific problem. It is about xdg-open failing to launch the browser.

I followed this procedure and it still does not work. Will I receive an update that will fix this issue?
Is there a way to manually fix the xdg-open problem?

I followed this procedure as well...Still no dice :-(

I have all the associated dependencies, but the UbuntuOne icon is no longer adding itself to my Applications --> Internet panel, and loading it manually does nothing as well.

This should have been fixed yesterday. Going through the installation procedure again should install the necessary packages. Users may want to ensure that ubuntuone processes are ended/killed before starting the process. It may require a log-out/in between steps 2 and 3.

I tried again without success. I'm not sure if my case is unique but my problem is that nothing occurs when I execute ubuntuone-client-applet. I hope you someone can identify and fix this problem soon.

I received an update just now and it now displays an icon of the applet when I launch the client.
The only problem now is that I don't see the 'add my computer' page as it should. I thought it might have to do with the fact that I have Firefox 3.5 (from Mozilla PPA) as my default browser but it still did not work after I set the default browser to Firefox 3.0.

The only way I got 'add my computer' page was by making Epiphany my default browser.

I second heavyt. I went to System->Preferences->Preferred Applications and changed my default browser to Epiphany, clicked on Ubuntu One and it worked.
