What is ubuntu one?

Asked by Boudewijn

I run UNR 9.10 on my laptop. On the "favourites" tab of the program starter, there's this cloudy icon called Ubuntu One. On clicking, there's a new program running in the notification area and a webpage open to log in to one.ubuntu.com.

So far, all is well. After loging in, I got the One-webinterface, with no explaination whatsoever I am doing. After some clicks via the account information, there's a link to the faq that tells about the faq that links to the faq and finally, I got the faq. The faq got some answers to questions about various aspects of One, but no introduction yet.

Asking a new question (this one: "What is ubuntu one") brings me to launchpad.net, telling me that there's not yet an answer to that question. Actually it turns out that on that very page there's a "top frame" with a cloudy Ubuntu mark, and the menu item "overview".

I opened that one in another tab, as not to lose track of asking a question.

I am aware that One is a beta service, and am also not totally blank as to which services it aspires to render. Probably there's more documentation in the pipeline. Is one of those pieces an introduction to One?

Is it feasible to have first time users of One have a pop-up or some note on the first login, giving the text of that first paragraph of the overview, with a question if they appreciate a tour of their new service?

https://one.ubuntu.com/ contains more information, but yes, you're probably right that there should be a bit more information for users that don't know. So, if you like it, please file a bug with the issues you mention on this question

I love this line "there's a link to the faq that tells about the faq that links to the faq and finally, I got the faq." I had to laugh so much at this line and question because it virtually a replication of what I did when I was looking for what UO is all about. Not to mention what is a "cloud"? let alone instructions on how to use the sites functions. Come on guys, just because you feed on "cod (code) and chips" doesn't mean everyone else does. Other than than, great effort.

Very good question. What is ubuntu one? There should definitely be a better introduction to this service.
After spending a lot of time reading; the FAQ, the one.ubuntu.com page, the wiki page, the tutorials page (collect all this information in one place!) here is what i think the answer is. I have no clue if this answer is anything close to being correct.
But it should give some hints as to what should be included in a introduciton.

Ubuntu one is a service for storing and syncing data online.
What the ubuntu one client refers to is a complete mystery. In my experience it must be one of the following

-The applet sitting in my panel
-The folder in my home directory called 'Ubuntu One'
-The web interface to this service

but i have no clue which one of these it is. What are people talking about when they talk about the 'client'?

Can you help with this problem?
