Managing folders and files

Asked by Jorma Hytonen

I just start using Ubuntu One with 9.10 Karmic Ubuntu + kde-desktop = KDE

It seems, that uploading entire folder is not possible. Folder can't be select in file select dialog.
Also Delete folder does not work. I try it with Konqueror and Firefox 3.5
Rename folder might be useful when one are creating folder structure at start

Hi Jorma,

Thank you for the question/suggestion! You are correct, you cannot currently upload entire folders using the web interface. We suggest using the Ubuntu One client (it works on KDE but you do have to have GNOME dependencies). There is also a KDE client in the works by Harald Sitter that may be of interest to you: http://apachelog.blogspot.com/2009/11/ubuntu-one-kde-tech-preview.html

Thank you,

Joshua

Ok. But there are no Dolphin integration at KDE desktop. Even I install Harald's kde-client-applet.

Quote: "Once authentication is implemented an the client works properly I'll take a look into implementing Dolphin integration (most likely via a kio slave, due to lack of other options). Meanwhile the Desktop CouchDB Akonadi resources get finsihed. So we will hopefully have meaningful integration into the KDE Platform by the time Kubuntu 10.04 LTS gets released."

I have both GNOME and KDE desktops. When I login with GNOME, then Nautilus give me the "Share with Ubuntu One" option. Also I do have Ubuntu One Client in my KDE notification area. But there are no possibility to sync files to Ubuntu One. My only interface is "Go to Web". "Open Folder" option opens Dolphin at Ubuntu One folder, but nothing else.

Even if I try to run Nautilus from terminal (kde), there are no share option. Instead of that I got lots of warnings, of course.

So, do i have to wait Ubuntu 10 release, with KDE desktop?

Hi Jorma,

If you install Ubuntu One in a KDE environment then it should still sync files. Some of the file management (Nautilus) features won't be there but it should still sync files and folders placed in ~/Ubuntu One/

Thank you,

Joshua

No, It does not.

I have many new file(s) in my local folder (~/Ubuntu One/) and there are no sync to Ubuntu One.
Only those what I create and saved with web-interface was seen.

In boot time applet tells me that "Updating files" but noting else.
There are no files in Ubuntu One folder.

Hi Jorma,

It sounds like the client isn't working properly. Can you please right-click on the Ubuntu One client and select "Report a Problem" to submit a bug report with log files?

Thank you,

Joshua

Ok, I do that.
I temporary remove Ubuntu One client from my Karmic, because It's slow down all other processes. Like Thunderbird and Firefox.
I reinstall and send bug report.

Funny thing.
After complete removing UbuntuOne and then using two step re-installation
1) Install ubuntuone-client and other components using Synaptic
2) Then install UbuntuOne (tray applet and Nautilus extension) using Software Center

Now it sync files properly.
So, if I copy files or folder in local ~/Ubuntu One/, after synchronization they appears in Ubuntu One web-interface.
